NATIONAL PARK OF LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES

It is a unique ecosystem for this reason it’s protected by ICMBio (Institute of biodiversity Chico Mendes), there are excursions and trails predetermined that are designed so as not to affect the many natural phenomena that occur within it. Among these, biologists pay particular attention to the migratory phenomenon of birds that migrate from the northern hemisphere to escape from the cold winter and of sea turtles that come to lay their eggs on the lençóis cost which is the biggest virgin coast of Brazil.

Inside the park lives the Pininga turtle (Trachemys audiutrix), an endemic specie of the Maranhão state that is object of study by biologist such the Ezcurra de Drago sponge (Corvoheteromeyenia heterosclera) which is in extinction but is also the main food for several species of the park.

Last but not least, remember that there are some park sites accessible only on foot through trekking such as the primitive zone of the unit, where are located the so-called "oasis" of Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos, the access of vehicles in these places is strictly forbidden.

For those reasons, it is important to always rely on authorised guides and to move, where permitted, with vehicles also authorised.
